HDPE 5 L Lubricant Jerry Can Extrusion Blow Molding — Double-Station Double-Die Line for a Lubricant Packer in Russia
Customer name withheld. Results as observed on the customer's running line.
The requirement
For a lubricant brand the container is the shelf, yet this Russian packer didn't control it — every 5 L oil jerry can came from an outside supplier, which meant waiting on lead times, accepting inconsistent wall thickness, and paying a margin on empty plastic. As demand grew, packaging became the bottleneck, not the oil, and a single-station line couldn't keep up.
Oil packaging is also unforgiving: a 5 L flat jerry can has to survive palletised stacking, resist stress cracking under long contact with hydrocarbon contents, and carry an integral handle that stays strong exactly where the wall tends to thin during blowing. The recurring failures — thin handle radius, top-load collapse, weeping pinch seams — turn into leaking product on a shelf. They needed the problem solved at the machine, and they needed throughput.
The line AMAN delivered
Extrusion blow molding is the right process for this container class, and it is what AMAN supplies. A parison of molten HDPE is extruded, the mould pinches it off and air inflates it against the cavity — exactly how an integral, in-mould handle is formed in a single shot rather than welded on afterward. We walk through each stage of that cycle in the extrusion blow molding process, step by step. AMAN configured a double-station, double-die-head EBM line for the 5 L flat jerry can: two die heads extrude two parisons while two mould stations alternate, so throughput roughly doubles over a single-station machine. Parison wall-thickness programming adds material to the handle radius and base where stack strength and drop resistance are decided.
The line was specified around what actually matters for oil containers: an HDPE grade with stress-crack resistance suited to lubricant contents, controlled pinch-off for a clean, reliably sealed weld line, and automatic deflashing that removes neck and base flash without hand-trimming. AMAN supplied the complete double-station line for this project — the footage here is that line in production at the customer's plant, blowing the two yellow 5 L parisons — and paired delivery with operator training and after-sales support.
The results
- Double-station, double-die-head EBM line for 5 L flat HDPE lubricant and motor-oil jerry cans
- Two die heads and alternating mould stations roughly double throughput over a single-station machine
- Integral in-mould handles formed in one blow cycle, with parison programming reinforcing the handle radius where thinning normally occurs
- Even wall distribution for stack-strong, drop-resistant cans, with an HDPE grade matched to oil contact
- Automatic deflashing on the line, with operator training and after-sales support
